Episode 10 of Don’t tell the Doctor saw Kyri get treatment for his Dissecting Cellulitis.
Kyri had been suffering with this condition for sometime and had taken to wearing a head scarf to cover his condition. With his forthcoming wedding approaching he decided it was time to do something about it.
What is Dissecting Cellulitis?
Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp is a rare condition in which pus-filled lumps develop on the scalp, resulting in scarring and permanent hair loss over the area affected.
What causes it?
A definitive cause is unknown however the most likely explanation is due to blocked and ruptured hair follicles, resulting in significant inflammation and secondary bacterial infection. An example is shown below.
How can it be treated?
Retinoid tablets (eg isotretinoin commonly known as Roaccutane) are most commonly prescribed for severe acne may also be used to treat dissecting cellulitis of the scalp as well.
However a combination of treatments may be needed to treat the condition aggressively in order to avoid long term scarring hair loss. Other treatments may include topical treatments, medicated shampoos and other oral medication.
Are there any side effects to the treatment?
Yes. As with any medication there can be side effects, common ones may include:
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth and skin
- Dry nose leading to nose bleeds
- Headaches
Roaccutane must only be taken with medical supervision due to other potential more harmful side effects.
