Rosacea is a common skin condition that usually affects the face, in particular the nose and cheek areas. The area can become red, flush easy and sometimes pustules form. Broken and dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia) can cause the redness and flushing.
There have been many theories postulated, as to the cause but we still do not know the exact cause. Oral and topical antibiotics are available and also some new creams/gels that can attack the demodex mite (which may be responsible for rosacea), and also reduce flushing but these treatments do not always control the rosacea.
Research is pointing to a neurogenic cause i.e. stimuli from the nervous system may affect rosacea, hence emotional responses like feeling embarrassed or angry can trigger a flare. Blood vessels are affected by nerve impulses as well as the sebaceous glands in the skin.
New research is showing that anti-wrinkle treatment can affect the blood vessels and stop them from dilating too much. The injection is made more superficially than the usual areas on the face (where it is normally used to soften wrinkles).
The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2012, reported 13 people who suffered from rosacea being treated with micro-injections of anti-wrinkle treatment. An average range of 8 to 12 units were injected in each patient’s cheek. Decreased flushing , redness as well as reduced inflammation were noted within one week of the injections and lasted for up to three months!
This is very promising research….we are now finding more and more uses for anti-wrinkle treatment, from softening wrinkles and lines to reducing sweating to now reducing the symptoms of Rosacea.
