If you are suffering from severe acne and are over the age of 12, you may be able to benefit from the medication known as Roaccutane.
What is involved in Roaccutane Treatment?
During a consultation that will allow me to ascertain if Roaccutane is suitable for you, I will establish the correct dose for your treatment.
Your treatment can last between 4 and 6 months and you will be closely monitored during this time.
Blood tests are used to monitor various markers, eg Liver Function and Lipid Profiles. Females must take additional care to avoid pregnancy during treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Whilst this treatment is VERY effective against severe acne, there can be side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Joint and muscle pain
- Back pain
- Dryness and cracking of the skin and lips
- Dry irritated eyes, inflammation of eye lids
- Skin rash, mild itching
- Dry mouth
- Dry nose, potential nose bleeds
- Low tolerance to sunlight and alcohol
Advice for patients
I advise the following precautions during and for 6 months after your treatment:
- Avoid using wax epilation, dermabrasion and laser skin treatment
- Use plenty of moisturizer
- Use vaseline on dry lips
- Use high SPF broad spectrum sunblock but try to avoid the sun where possible
I recently treated Naz in ‘Don’t tell the Doctor’ on Channel 5 Star, she had been experiencing severe acne for years and had not taken medical advice with her treatments.
Acne can be a very distressing condition and it is very worthwhile speaking to a professional to work through your options in a safe and effective way, there are solutions available.
